Students within the Peace River School Division (PRSD) have the opportunity to advocate for their schools through Student Engagement Sessions with the Board of Trustees each spring.
Each year, two students from Grades 5-9, and two students from Grades 10-12 from every school in the Division are selected to be a part of the PRSD Student Engagement Team. Once selected, students have the chance to virtually meet with their Superintendent to discuss the results from the recent Student Assurance Survey that was completed by all students in the Division. The Engagement Team is encouraged to use the data to form questions for the Board of Trustees and provide feedback that could allow for necessary and positive changes within their schools.
Student Engagement Sessions with the Board of Trustees takes place over two days and is in-person at Central Operations. Students are transported in from their schools, given special “PRSD Student Engagement Team” t-shirts, and have full access to discuss important, specific topics that surround their schools and the Division. The Board of Trustees believes that these engagement sessions are essential, as they allow for student led advocacy, and provide direct communication and information from students who have shown an interest in improving their schools.
The collaboration between students and Trustees allows the students to feel seen, heard, and respected. Showing support for students is crucial, and genuinely listening to their concerns, ideas and opinions creates a strong connection between them and the Board of Trustees.
Student voices matter, and the PRSD Board feels that this is an important aspect to highlight as much as possible!
