Fifth Annual STEAM Games Highlight Sturgeon Public Schools' Talent

On May 23rd, Sturgeon Public Schools proudly hosted the fifth Sturgeon STEAM Games, an extraordinary celebration of innovation and ingenuity. This dynamic event brought together approximately 220 students from Grades 1 to 12, across 13 schools in our Division, offering a unique platform for these young minds to showcase their skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Sturgeon STEAM Games is designed to foster collaboration, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving among students, and features a different theme each year. This year, students tackled challenges rooted in the fascinating realm of outer space. Student teams were selected beforehand to represent their schools, and upon arriving at the event, they received their tasks for a Programming Challenge, Prototype Challenge and Pathway Challenge. Students then had a set timeframe to brainstorm, design, create and test their solutions before presenting them to the judges. This hands-on, fast-paced environment pushed students to think on their feet and work effectively as a team. In addition to these three events, students created a sculpture in advance for an Artistic Design Challenge, which was brought to the event for showcasing and judging.

Our young innovators rose to the occasion, demonstrating remarkable talent and ingenuity. The event was both educational and entertaining, providing a glimpse into the future of technology and innovation. Projects ranged from engineering spacecraft models to creating art inspired by the future space exploration, all of which demonstrated the diverse talents and interests of our students.

The Sturgeon STEAM Games were not just a competition but a celebration of community, reflecting our commitment to nurturing future leaders in STEAM fields. Esteemed guests and members of our educational team served as judges, underscoring the event's significance. Among them were Sturgeon County Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, Morinville Deputy Mayor Jenn Anheliger, Sturgeon Public Schools Trustees Trish Murray-Elliott and Stacey Buga, representatives from North West Redwater and Pembina Pipeline, Superintendent Shawna Warren, Deputy Superintendent Jonathan Konrad, Shannon Requa (Director of Education Planning), Robert Litchfield (Director of Technology and Logistics), and Nicole Farwell (Curriculum Coordinator).

Additionally, special recognition is due to Kourtney Kerr, our Technology Lead teacher, whose meticulous coordination ensured the event's success and exemplified our dedication to fostering STEAM education.

We are immensely proud of all the students who participated and grateful for the support from our community leaders and partners. Sturgeon STEAM Games have once again highlighted the incredible potential of our students and the vibrant educational environment we cultivate here in Sturgeon Public Schools.

As we reflect on the success of this year's STEAM Games, we look forward to continuing to inspire and challenge our students, fostering a love for learning and innovation that will carry them into the future.
