Division Launches EA Training Program to Strengthen Support


The Division is excited to announce a comprehensive training program for Educational Assistants (EAs), aimed at enhancing their skills and confidence in supporting students. This initiative reflects the Division’s ongoing commitment to fostering professional growth among its staff. Led by Michelle Duffy, the Division’s experienced EA Coach, the program includes seven dynamic modules, each tailored to address the specific challenges and opportunities faced by EAs in today’s educational environment.


The program officially kicked off on September 16th, blending video-based learning with reflection exercises, on-the-job coaching, and collaborative communities of practice. “This training empowers EAs with practical tools and strategies to navigate their day-to-day responsibilities,” said Michelle Duffy. “Through video modules and collaborative discussions, we’re fostering a supportive community where EAs can grow and learn from one another.”

Last school year, the Division had the opportunity to participate in the Educational Assistant Internship Pilot alongside 13 other school divisions. This initiative, led by Edmonton Public Schools and funded by Alberta Education, provided ample opportunities for divisions to tailor specific portions of the program to meet their unique context. The valuable insights gained through that experience has allowed the Division to bring the program in-house and offer it directly to EA’s.


Participants will also benefit from real-time coaching, designed to help them directly apply new knowledge and techniques in their workplace. “It’s great to have this ongoing support,” shared one EA participant. “The hands-on guidance helps me feel more confident in supporting my students.”


Sha Tichkowsky, Director of Inclusive Learning, emphasized the significance of this initiative: “This training reflects our commitment to equipping EAs with the knowledge and skills they need to make a meaningful impact on student success.”


In addition to the seven modules, EAs will have access to four communities of practice, where they can share experiences, troubleshoot challenges through scenarios, and gain insights from their peers and coach. The Division’s focus on continuous learning ensures that all staff members are empowered to support student success, creating a stronger, more inclusive learning environment for everyone.
