The County of Lacombe was awarded with the prestigious Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) Friends of Education Zone 4 Award in November.
Celebrating a partnership with Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS), rooted in unwavering commitment to student well-being and holistic education, Lacombe County Reeve Barb Shepherd accepted the award at the ASBA awards gala in Edmonton.
For years, the County of Lacombe has exemplified leadership and dedication, providing vital support to WCPS. Their annual contribution of $150,000 has aided in the division to provide 21 school social workers as a needed resource to students. These professionals serve as critical lifelines, offering guidance, resources, and care that extend beyond academics to emotional and social support.
“Our school social workers are extremely important in providing students with the support they require to be successful,” said Tim De Ruyck, WCPS Superintendent. “They lift up students facing anxiety, depression, or challenges at home, ensuring every child knows they are not alone. This impact ripples across our schools, touching classrooms, hallways, and families.”
In addition to supporting social workers, the County has been instrumental in funding School Resource Officers (SROs). These officers act as mentors, role models, and trusted confidants, helping students navigate complex situations while fostering safe and supportive environments.
The County's dedication to a holistic approach to education has been pivotal in creating resilient, well-rounded individuals. WCPS Board of Trustees expressed deep gratitude to County Manager Tim Timmons and Reeve Barb Shepherd for their leadership and continued investment in youth and education.
WCPS Board Chair Luci Henry highlighted the importance of sharing this success story on a provincial stage.
“Showcasing this partnership to colleagues from across Alberta reinforces the value of collaboration between schools and communities,” she said.
“It’s an opportunity to inspire others and demonstrate what is possible when we prioritize student well-being and commit to working together. This award is not just recognition for Lacombe County—it’s a reflection of what can be achieved through shared vision and action.”
The Friends of Education Award celebrates this partnership as a model of collaboration and commitment, underscoring the transformative power of community investment in education.
“When you invest in education and the mental health of young people, you’re building a stronger, more compassionate future,” De Ruyck added.
